Log off Shawl Mystery Crochet A-Long

Welcome to the new mystery! Here is what we know so far:

What are we making?

Inspired by traditional quilt motifs of log cabin quilts it is a perfect wrap style shawl for when you'd rather not get out of bed, just take your comfort with you! It's a simple relaxing make, with just enough twists and turns to keep it interesting. The pattern is called "Log Off" partly because of the quilt inspiration but also because I found myself so engaged in the project as it grew that my phone was switched off more and more to focus on my crochet.

The wrap uses four or more colours and is a great way to use advent minis or to use up small amounts of yarn left over from other projects. You can make the shawl in 4ply, sport or DK weight yarn.

It uses a simple stitches so is suitable for everyone who can crochet and you'll have additional tutorials and photos provided to help you and keep you on track as we go.

We'll break the pattern down into seven parts (or clues) and you'll get a new one sent to you each week for seven weeks, starting on January 14th.

What sizes are available?

It's a one size pattern. The finished size will depend on the yarn weight you decide to use. The sample is made in sport weight and measures 56cm/22in wide by 168cm/66in long.

A full guide to calculating sizing in your chosen yarn can be found here.

When do we start?

The first clue will be released on Friday 14th January 2022 with a clue each week for seven weeks.  The seventh and final clue will be released on 25th February

How do I join in?

To join in, just buy the the pattern, and make it!

If you want to get involved on social media, we will host the chat in our Facebook group Friends of the Crochet Project (you'll need to ask to join) or play along on instagram using the hashtag #LogOffMCAL to find and share progress and tips.

Want to get a group together in your yarn shop or crochet together in person or online? Great! Just make sure you follow local covid guidelines and have fun.

What materials do I need?

For the sport weight version:

350g total of sport weight yarn in at least four different colours (you can combine as many colours as you like. We used 100g each for Yarn A, B and C and 50g of Yarn D but any or all of these can be broken into several yarn types)

4.5mm crochet hook (or size needed to achieve tension)

2 removable stitch markers

A full guide to choosing yarns and the amounts needed can be found here.

Do you have kits?

Yes we do! - the sample is made in the gorgeous Daughter of a Shepherd Ram Jam Sport and we have a limited number of kits available so you can make the wrap exactly as Joanne has.

Ram Jam Sport epitomises the philosophy of Daughter of a Shepherd, allowing British farmers to be paid a fair price for their fleeces and blending the wool of a variety of breeds from flocks where the fleeces would otherwise go to waste. The fleeces are carefully sorted into colours to create bold but natural colours perfect for colourwork and striping.

The kit contains 7 50g skeins of Ram Jam Sport (2 x shade 0, 2 x shade 1, 2 x shade 2 and 1 x shade D) all presented in a project bag. You can add a hook and stitch markers to your order if you wish.

Kits will be available to preorder until 4th of Jan and will ship that week to arrive in most countries in time for the start of The Crochet A-long.

While we will fulfill worldwide orders on these kits, we would suggest that non-UK buyers may prefer to source their yarn locally to keep shipping costs and carbon footprint down.  Please be aware that if you are not UK based, your parcel will likely attract additional charges at customs.

How will the pattern be presented and sent?

The pattern will be written and you'll be sent a new part of the pattern by email and/or dropped into your Ravelry library each week.

Please make sure that you check the email you enter at checkout is the one you would like the pattern sent to.

What are all these acronyms?

CAL is short for crochet a-long. MCAL is short for mystery crochet a-long.
