With the perfect amount of slouch and an interesting but simple stitch pattern the Kelpie Hat is suitable for adventurous beginners up. Using just one 100g skein of DK weight yarn, it is quick to make.
Variagated yarns can be tricky to crochet with, the simple but effective stitch pattern in this cosy hat, draws the yarn across in strands that show off the beautiful dyeing to its full effect.
To fit head circumference: 50(56,63)cm/20(22,25)in
Finished circumference at brim: 48(53,61)cm/19(21,24)in
1x 115g skeins Fyberspates Vivacious DK (DK, 100% Merino Superwash Wool, 230m/251yds) in Sea Green.
4.5mm (US 7) hook
6mm (US J) hook
20 sts and 12 rows in htr in BLO to 10 cm/4 in using 4.5mm hook (or size needed to achieve tension)
16 sts and 16 rows in body pattern to 10 cm/4 in using 6mm hook (or size needed to achieve tension)
Note, the row height of the rib (htr in BLO) is the most crucial part of the tension to get right.
Basic crochet stitches, working in rows, working into row ends, working in rounds with turning, working in back loops only.
Starting with the brim, worked in rows, the hat is then worked in rounds, turned each round and decreased in pattern at the crown.
