Tipping the Scales Socks

Welcome to the Tipping the Scales Sock Mystery Crochet A-Long (MCAL)

Whether you are a crochet sock lover or just curious this is the crochet a-long for you. With brand new techniques and a wonderfully stretchy unisex pattern these may be the best crochet socks ever. The pattern is sized for everyone in the family – from baby toes to a large adult male foot.

Starting on 26th December 2020 and delivered in five weekly parts, there will be plenty of support along the way for those who haven’t attempted socks before. A crochet a-long is the perfect way to beat the second sock syndrome as you are encouraged to work both socks simultaneously.

The pattern name refers to a pattern detail rather than any comment about your consumption over the holidays!

This pattern will be sent to you in parts, when you purchase the pattern you'll be sent an information sheet. On the 26th December you will be emailed with the first part of the pattern to start on. We recommend saving the pattern to your Ravelry library (the link to do this are given on your order confirmation email) as it is the easiest and most reliable way to get the pattern updates.

Pattern information

Seven sizes to fit baby to adult.
Finished circumference at foot: 12 (13, 18, 21, 22, 27, 31)cm/4.5 (5, 7, 8, 8.5, 10.5, 12)in

Finished length is fully adjustable, a standard size guide is included to make gifting easier. Choose the size closest to, or slightly larger than, your foot circumference at its widest point.

1 50g skein Coop Knits Socks Yeah! (4ply, 75% fine super wash merino wool, 25%nylon, 212m/231yds/50g) in each of:
Col A: Lapis (125)
Col B: Topaz (113)
Col C: Sphene (104)
3mm hook (US D)
2 removable stitch markers

The yarn should ideally be a wool nylon blend for strength, elasticity and breathability, but a hardy high-twist wool designed for socks would also work. This pattern lends itself well to using up smaller scraps. 150g total will make a large adult pair, smaller sizes will require less yarn. Recommend at least three colours for the pattern although a self-striping yarn would also work nicely. Colours are used in fairly even amounts.

23 sts and 20 rows in htr to 10cm/4in using 3mm hook (or size needed to achieve tension)

Difficulty Rating

Skills Needed
Basic crochet stitches, working in rounds, working in rows, working into row ends, missing stitches, spike stitches (working into previous rows), short rows, decreasing.

Its a surprise for now.

This pattern is written and charted using standard UK crochet terminology (US conversions given in the abbreviations)
