At The Crochet Project we love a good shawl, and we know you do too so we are back with another collection.
We’ve always loved the look of gradient yarns and now they are becoming as popular with commercial yarn companies as they are with our beloved indies, it seemed a great time to celebrate them in a book of designs that show them off to their fullest.
Gradients are great for making bold colourful shawls without having lots of ends to sew in. The colour changes do the work for you so they work well with nice simple designs. With gradient yarns it is all about showing the direction of the work and all of these shawls use different shapings to send the rays of colour off in different directions.
In this book we share our love of shawls with five new designs and show you the secrets of shaping them.
All patterns are written in UK standard crochet terminology charted and have schematics.

I want to crochet all of the designs in this pattern book! The simplicity of the designs makes them pleasing to the eye but stops them being frumpy. Another set of modern, contemporary designs. A super collection that lets the yarn sing!
The patterns in this book are are perfectly designed for gradient yarn cakes or gradient sets, although feel free to mix it up by using one colour or high contrast yarns. As always with crochet project patterns they are very clearly written, with stitch diagrams and beautiful photos. I also love the additional information in this book about different shawl shapes and designs - which is really inspiring if you want to challenge yourself to design your own shawls.
This was my first Crochet Project Book and I love it. Having crocheted mainly scarves and shawls for most of my crafting life (much longer than I care to admit - though I learnt at a very young age!), I loved the look of the patterns but didn’t expect to learn so much, especially when I thought I ‘knew’ yarn pretty well. The techniques and explanations are so clear and easy to follow, I have made 4 of the scarves (some several times), bought all of the other scarf/shawl books and been inspired to try a jumper, starting with Ettinsmoor from Everyday Wearables. I also learnt the technique to wind a centre pull ball just recently, expertly illustrated on Instagram. Joanne is genius and I highly recommend everyone to give this book a try (or one of the other ones, they are all brilliant). Expert or relative newbie, there is something for everyone. And you’ll end up with a lovely item at the end too.
You would think, given that I already owned three shawl pattern books, that this would be taking things a bit far, do you really need ANOTHER book of shawl patterns? Well, when this is that book, yes. Yes, you do. The first pattern that drew my attention was Diffraction - beautiful gradient yarn from Pook GB and such an amazing pattern. When I came to make it, it literally blew my mind. Such genius! If you haven't yet made this shawl, I recommend you make it immediately! It's such a clever creation. But, there are plenty of other shawls in the book worth your while, another favourite of mine is Parallel Lines. Clear instruction, clear diagrams and you are left with dreamy shawls that are the envy of everyone.
This is a lovely book with clearly written patterns and explanations of all terms. I have made three of the five patterns included - one of them twice! The Diffraction shawl is especially good, and actually one of my favourite makes, of all time ever - the combination of the pattern and the recommended yarn truly are outstanding, and it frequently attracts attention when I wear it. So not only can I thank The Crochet Project for great patterns but also for sparking conversations about crochet all over Europe!
